Top Bar Hives and Their Like.

The Top Bar Hive Has A Few

The variant of a top bar hive below allows for easy inspection of the brood and the bees. This saves a lot of time and manhandling for the beekeeper who wants to get to know bees and to be able to check on them in an easier fashion than with the Langstroth Hive

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Apiary

I am busy trying to rescue many bee swarms that are currently on the move in Perth. You will notice from the attached picture that the swarm can sometimes be tricky to transport bearing in mind that it is the daytime and not the night which is the ideal time to move them.

Evidence that the queen is within this container is the number of worker bees on the outside of the netting,

they being drawn there by the pheromones of the bees which in turn derive theirs from the queen. I’m glad to say that this swarm is now housed in a proper bee hive and the species seems to be a good one. I’m hoping that the temperature does not maintain mid summer intensity in this part of spring as this can make keeping the bees cool extremely difficult.
